Breaking Barriers, Creating Opportunities: Seminar on Career Opportunity

November 5, 2011

A question most often faced by graduating students of any university is what to do next in life. In today’s world, there are several options available for people. However, for people with disabilities, these options may not be as widely available. This is not because there is a lack of ability but often because there is lack of information about what opportunities exist and how one can gather the required knowledge and skills to pursue a particular career path.  To address the need we are organizing a seminar on ‘Career opportunities’ in collaboration with EOC, University of Delhi on 18th November, to bridge this gap.

There are skilled jobs available after graduation in various streams. These include:

  • Advertising, Film, Media & Mass Communication

  • Banking, Finance & Commerce

  • Management

  • Physical Education & Sports

  • Arts, Law & Language

  • Fashion, Textile & Accessory Design

  • Medical, Pharmacy & Health Care Services

  • Computer Applications (Web design, Animation)

  • Tourism, Hospitality & Aviation

  • Architecture

  • Teaching

  • Higher Education & Research

  • Administration.

  • Soft skills (careers in BPO, KPO)

This is not an exhaustive list and can include other streams as well. The seminar will focus on career opportunities available to people with disabilities and the assistance available towards pursuing the same. There will be speakers from the disability sector who are working to create job opportunities for people with disabilities. There will a perspective shared on the issues that women with disability face when choosing careers. Speakers will also include people with disabilities who are today successful in their respective areas of work. Other speakers will include career counselors and experts from various fields. The sessions will be interactive and informative with the aim of addressing the concerns that students may have regarding their potential future careers.

An 'Apple' a day keeps the disability away

October 8, 2011

The media image of the disability is almost distorted perpetuating wrong beliefs among both abled and disabled as very well portrayed by Abha Khetarpal. The commercial for the new Apple iPhone Siri is different in this sense. It embraces Steve Jobs vision of embracing universal design both technology wise as well as promotion wise. The commercial ends with a visually impaired using the device. This is not the end. The soundtrack also is given by a visually impaired person- Ray Charles. As Job...

“Give me accessibility and I will give you productivity”

August 21, 2011

Abha Khetarpal gives a new slogan on Independence day:

Stairs without lifts, books without Braille prints, communication devoid of sign language…there still pervades a reign of inaccessibility. More than 50 million disabled people in our country till this date, live like slaves.. People with impairments still remain oppressed…Oppressed by negative social attitudes, oppressed by insensitivities, and oppressed by apathy and what not. Where is the freedom in actual sense of the term!

The...
